The Insurance Services Office, rebranding to parent company name of Verisk, collects information on municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. In each community, Verisk analyzes the relevant data using their Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). Verisk then assigns a Public Protection Classification (PPC) from 1 to 10 to the community. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area has no fire protection. The current Holmen Area Fire Department’s (HAFD) Public Community Classification (PPC) is 04/4Y for the Village of Holmen and Town of Holland.
The FSRS rating system provides an objective, standard that helps fire departments in planning and budgeting for facilities, equipment, personnel, and training. HAFD’s current and future budget requests are influenced by the PPC program, as it provides the opportunity for reductions in insurance rates for communities that are able to address the deficiencies noted during the rating process. HAFD leadership will continue to work with Village and Town leadership to find avenues to improve the jurisdictions PPC.
